Linear heat detection and fire system solutions for high‑risk environments

Protectowire Fire Systems deliver reliable, highly accurate linear heat detection and fire system control solutions designed for commercial, institutional, and industrial environments. From digital linear heat detectors to advanced fiber optic sensing technology, Protectowire systems provide early fire detection where traditional point detectors may be ineffective or impractical.

Designed for demanding applications, Protectowire solutions offer continuous line coverage, precise point sensitivity, low maintenance, and long service life—making them ideal for high‑risk and special hazard environments.

Protectowire linear heat detector

The Protectowire Linear Heat Detector is a proprietary, fixed‑temperature digital linear heat detection cable that detects heat conditions anywhere along its length. This design provides continuous line coverage while maintaining point‑level sensitivity, making it ideal for long runs, confined spaces, and harsh environments.

How the Protectowire linear heat detector works

The sensor cable consists of:

    • Two steel conductors individually insulated with a heat‑sensitive polymer
    • Conductors twisted together to create constant spring pressure
    • Protective tape wrapping and an outer jacket suited to the installation environment

When the detector reaches its rated activation temperature, the heat‑sensitive polymer insulation yields to the pressure between the conductors, allowing them to make contact and initiate an alarm signal.

Key advantages

    • Detects heat at any point along its length
    • No minimum heated length required to activate an alarm
    • No calibration required to compensate for ambient temperature changes
    • Provides line coverage with point sensitivity
    • Long service life with low maintenance requirements

Protectowire outer jackets are engineered to resist corrosion, chemicals, moisture, and extreme temperatures, allowing the cable to be installed close to hazards for faster response times.

System integration

Protectowire Linear Heat Detectors are normally open contact devices and can be interfaced with intelligent fire alarm control panels using System Sensor monitor modules, including:

    • M500MB
    • M500DM
    • M501M
    • IM‑10

Confirmed temperature initiation (cti™) technology

Confirmed Temperature Initiation (CTI™) is a patented digital linear heat detection technology developed by The Protectowire Company. CTI enhances traditional digital linear heat detection by enabling short circuit discrimination.

Before initiating an alarm, CTI technology confirms that a true thermal event has occurred. This verification step significantly reduces false alarms caused by:

    • Physical damage to the detector
    • Accidental crushing or cutting of the sensor cable

CTI™ linear heat detector (CTI™ & CTM‑530)

Using thermocouple technology and dissimilar metal conductors, CTI™ Linear Heat Detectors can:

    • Distinguish between a short caused by physical damage and one caused by heat
    • Determine the exact alarm point location
    • Identify the temperature of the short condition

If the detected temperature is below the fixed alarm rating, a trouble or fault condition is initiated. If the temperature is above the fixed alarm rating, an alarm condition is triggered.

Protectowire CTI Digital Linear Heat Detectors are the only digital linear heat detectors with built‑in short circuit discrimination, providing greater system reliability and confidence in alarm activation.
