How the Protectowire linear heat detector works
The sensor cable consists of:
- Two steel conductors individually insulated with a heat‑sensitive polymer
- Conductors twisted together to create constant spring pressure
- Protective tape wrapping and an outer jacket suited to the installation environment
When the detector reaches its rated activation temperature, the heat‑sensitive polymer insulation yields to the pressure between the conductors, allowing them to make contact and initiate an alarm signal.

Before initiating an alarm, CTI technology confirms that a true thermal event has occurred. This verification step significantly reduces false alarms caused by:

Using thermocouple technology and dissimilar metal conductors, CTI™ Linear Heat Detectors can:

- Identify the temperature of the short condition
If the detected temperature is below the fixed alarm rating, a trouble or fault condition is initiated. If the temperature is above the fixed alarm rating, an alarm condition is triggered.
