Wheeled extinguishers are designed to protect high fire-risk areas where the potential for large-scale fires exist – think airports, steel mills, or loading docks. With proper training, wheeled extinguishers can be very effective against large fuel, in depth, spill, gravity fed and even pressure fires. Most often Class BC and Purple K dry chemical make these units an ideal way to attack large fires as first responders or are ideal in remote locations.
These heavy duty units have greater extinguishing agent capacities than portable extinguishers, are highly mobile and can be operated by just one person.
For best results employers should train workers on when to use and best practices for safe usage.
This video from Ansul outlines outlines the effective use of 150 and 350lbs wheeled fire extinguishers.
Additional tips for proper usage:
- Sweeping side to side and front to back approximately 1 foot beyond the fire area will help in maximizing the powder and knocking down the fire.
- Wheeled units can pack a lot of punch. Brace for the pressure by establishing a firm footing.
