When you work in the world of safety, staying popular with your team while enforcing rules can sometimes be a challenge (see Ask an Expert: What’s the Difference Between Telling vs. Tattling in the Workplace? for more on that). How can you make everyone happy while ensuring they’re staying safe?

By now, you’re likely familiar with our 35 Fundamentals. These fundamentals describe how we lead; the way we work with each other, how we treat our clients and suppliers and ultimately how we interact with each other to make Levitt-Safety an exceptional place to work with. They define who we are and they are what drives our success.

In today’s blog, we’re borrowing some of our favourite mantras that are especially effective when it comes to maintaining safety and relationships in the workplace. You can read the full list here.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

If you’re going to talk the talk, you have to walk the walk. Setting an example (whether or not you’re in a senior position on your team) provides a strong example that your peers can look up to. When you embody the change you want to see, others are likely to admire it and follow suit.

HONOUR COMMITMENTS

A huge part of building positive relationships is by giving your team the respect they deserve. Always follow through on your commitments so that you can build a sense of trust. Be on time for your phone calls, appointments, meetings and promises.

OWN IT

It’s important to respond to every situation by looking for how you can help solve it rather than explain why it can’t work. To stay popular in the safety world, your team members have to trust that you can pull your own weight, be accountable for your actions and follow up on any issues you recognize as soon as they happen.

BE THOUGHTFUL AND EASY TO WORK WITH

“I look up to them, but they’re so difficult to work with,” said no one ever. Being respectful of others’ time, providing positive feedback and finding ways to be ridiculously helpful can go a long way.

BE RELENTLESS ABOUT IMPROVEMENT

Now, this one is a biggie when it comes to safety. Always look for how you can help improve the situation. The tired excuse of “because that’s the way we’ve always done it” isn’t good enough when it comes to keeping your team safe. Be observant. Always be in search of ways that you can improve a situation – getting things done more efficiently and safely.

PRACTICE BLAMELESS PROBLEM SOLVING

No one ever became well-liked by throwing others under the bus. To stay popular in the safety world (or anywhere, really!), you must navigate issues without pointing fingers. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work.

THINK TEAM FIRST

There’s no “i” in “team” but there is one in “injury”! Remember, it’s about us and we, not I and me when it comes to providing a positive influence in a team setting. Look out for your peers and ensure they’re working safely at all times.

SHOW MEANINGFUL APPRECIATION

A simple “you did a great job” or “I appreciate your hard work” goes a long way. Often, we get wrapped up in our own projects and forget to show meaningful appreciation to everyone who contributed. Boost your clout with a simple “thank you” whenever it’s deserved.

BE POSITIVE

Ever heard the saying “life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it”? This holds true in the world of safety. There’s something really special about a person who can maintain a positive attitude even during the worst of times. Does this mean that you need to pretend you’re happy all the time? Of course not. But, approaching a situation with a positive perspective can make a world of difference – and, your peers will take notice and appreciate the optimism.

CHOOSE THE SAFE WAY ALWAYS

Safety must be above all else. When you prioritize the health and wellbeing of your team and yourself, the rest will follow.
